Geography could be roughly translated to €˜the science of the land€™, or €˜the knowledge of the world€™. However, this statement would indeed be an extremely basic statement, revealing hardly anything about the massive, all-encompassing span and relevance of the discipline in relation to the diverse vegetation, climate, and every form of life on earth. Since the ancient times, in ancient civilizations like the Sumerian civilization, the Incan civilization and the Mayan and Babylonian civilizations, geography was practiced as a means to decipher and study the mysteries of the land.   Geography was learnt with great enthusiasm, and helped the evolution of related disciplines like cartography, climatology, demographic studies and ecology. To these civilizations, geography was an important tenet that granted man mastery over his surroundings, deciding the courses of hunting, farming and even migration when confronted by hostile climate €“ in short, the courses of their very subsistence. However, the term €˜Geography€™ originated in the ancient Greek academies, and its use was first registered by the great Philosopher Eratosthenes.   In the modern world, the discipline of geography has achieved tremendous significance owing to its wide and extensive influence on the key discipline that fuels the development of scientific knowledge and awareness. Geography augments the evolution of important spheres like metallurgy, geological sciences, climate studies, and mineralogy €“ every science that has tremendous impacts on the global advancement of the human race. Although the discipline of €˜Geography€™ is a compulsory part of every academic curriculum across the world, it is a fluid, dynamic science. Geography is constantly changing to accommodate new information about land structures, formations, water bodies, vegetation and its natural habitat.
